FROM 80S TO NOW HOW TO UPDATE LAMINATE CABINETS

Laminate cabinets were all the rage in the 80s. They were cheap and durable, but now it seems like every outdated kitchen has these knocking your reno budget out of the park.

WHAT YOU NEED

Everything you need to update your laminate cabinets can be found in one kit. The Rustoleum Cabinet Tranformations kit has it all except brushes.

To start clean the cabinets, and then sand lightly. Using a heavy duty cabinet deglosser will help you skip the sanding portion.

If you plan on keeping the cabinets long term, I would suggest filling the grain with wood filler. It allows a more polished finish.

You should use a bonding primer to help cover the orange tone of the wood.

A high quality brush is a must. This will help you get a smoother finish. You should do multiple thin layers instead of one thick layer to avoid drips.

Plan the way you will paint the doors to avoid paint pooling. Paint the hook of the laminate cabinets first, then work up.

Use the paint brush then a roller to smooth, and sand between coats. Caulking the seams will help make the door look more polished. You can add a protective sealant coat to protect the paint.

And nothing updates better than adding new hardware. Look how we brought this kitchen from drab to fab for less!
